Mobile Devices and Job Tracking Software

We’ve come a long way from paper “travelers” which literally travel with an item that is being made on a factory floor. A lot of automation has been developed over the years to accomodate the physical movement of smaller items being manufactured from one workcenter or line to the next.. These products have been identified via barcodes in the past and are now being converted to RFID tags, which can be read cleaner and faster. This works quite well on smaller items such as bottles, bags of mixes, prepackaged foods, etc.

This same setup can be used within a Job Tracking Software system on the factory floor for larger and more complex products. In the receiving area, dock workers could use the Job Tracking Software system on raw components and materials. They could use the same system to track the loading of finished goods on trucks on their way to distributors. On the factory floor as the finished goods are manufactured, workcenter leaders could do the same at the machines, along with using the handheld device to log workers into and out of a certain job. These wireless scanners could also be used for warehouse management / inventory purposes plantwide, including in the office area.And small label printers connected via the network to the Job Tracking Software system could see even further use in the printing of inventory labels for all assets in the facility.

Using technologies in a progressive manner and encompassing even newer technologies in imaginative ways within a manufacturing facility can lead to more progress within the facility’s culture and methods.
